Boreal Forest,
Inverness County

While most of Nova Scotia is covered by Acadian forest, boreal forest can be found at elevations above 330 metres, primarily in the south-central and western highlands of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Compared to the more diverse Acadian forest, the mature boreal forest supports relatively few species of plants. Balsam fir is the dominant species in the boreal forest of northern Cape Breton. Characteristic wildlife of this ecosystem includes the Canada lynx, snowshoe hare, boreal chickadee, and Canada jay.
